This is the last of the Mercy Thompson novel published so far. Reading all nine in order is important to the story. Through the series, Mercy and her Alpha Werewolf husband build a non-traditional pack complete with a gay werewolf. I didn't really like the 8th book in the series that had a lot of women "catfights" in it but this last book had a nod to my hometown of Butte, MT and seemed to wrap up all the various strands. This might be it although she left the door open to more adventures.

This series is, hands down, my favorite series. Patricia Briggs does a masterful job drawing you into the world of Mercy Thompson and friends. Be ready for a series you can re-read over and over again.

Always a fun romp. And yet, this was a "quiet" book for me. I felt Mercy was facing less adversity than in previous novels. She isn't quite the same freewheeling single agent as she was at the start of the series, nor even as "alone" as in the previous book. Indeed, the pack's partial aversion to Mercy was handled - with some finality - such that no sympathy-rage was drawn from me. Overall, I was less emotionally involved and didn't feel the stakes were quite as high as in prior books - although objectively, they really were. In fact, the novel resolves elements that were coming to a point over the course of the series, making the climax rather masterful. Also, the portrayal of Underhill this time really gets its alienness across.

Unfortunately (for me!), the climax/climax-adjacent events involving the Mercy/Adam/new character trio went by pretty quickly and fairly smoothly, such that I feel somewhat cheated, like it was too easy. The "ease" is justified (by well defined characters with established strengths), still... I want more! I am eager to see what developments will come to the new character.

This is a great addition to the Mercy Thompson series. It was great to see Zee and Tad back, and see the continued development of Mercy's relationship with the pack. I only wish it had been longer so I could read more!

Patricia Briggs was born in Butte, Montana to a children’s librarian who passed on to her kids a love of reading and books. Patricia grew up reading fairy tales and books about horses, and later developed an interest in folklore and history. When she decided to write a book of her own, a fantasy book seemed a natural choice. Patricia graduated from Montana State University with degrees in history and German and she worked for a while as a substitute teacher. Currently, she lives in Montana with her husband, children and six horses and writes full-time, much to the delight of her fans

Mercy Thompson is a fantastic heroine. She is not the strongest or the most powerful, but she is astute and loyal, and when the chips fall, she comes through every time.

I left the last book a little bit angry at the pack and at Adam for the way the whole thing with his ex-wife played out. But I am happy to report, this issue got the resolution I needed here --and in pretty short order. Patricia Briggs dealt with the elephant in the room, and I am ready to love everyone again. The cohesiveness of the pack is actually a really important part of the story, as they must band together to face off with the Fae.

I can't forget to mention how much I loved the Walking Stick

When the pack is called to deal with a troll(non-internet) on a bridge, Mercy and Adam bring home a magical changling. Zee, Tad, Mike and Beauclaire help to protect the boy from the more predatory of the fae. Look for the return of Thomas, the Dragon Under the Hill, Baba Yaga and others.
