Based on the memoir by Amy-Jo Albany, LOW DOWN is a compassionate, tender look at the complex relationship between Amy-Jo (Elle Fanning) and her father Joe (John Hawkes), a man torn between his musical ambition, his devotion to his teenage daughter, and his suffocating heroin addiction. Set against a sensuously textured 1970s Hollywood, the film beautifully evokes a colorful, seedy world of struggling musicians, artists, and vagabonds, in which Joe and Amy-Jo strive to live the lives they want against seemingly insurmountable odds.

Elle Fanning does an excellent job as a teenage girl with two drug / alcohol addicted "parents". I use the term loosely as only a grandmother ( Glenn Close is amazing ) provides any stability. It is painful to watch this loving, trusting child as she lives with honor amid chaos. Recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby

A wonderful film about jazz pianist, Joe Albany and his daughter Amy based on an biography/autobiography by Amy Albany. Gritty realism of life in skidrow residential hotels in Los Angeles contrasted with the glorious jazz piano music created by this man and his friends. A rose growing out of a dung heap.

Great acting, sad but engrossing true story.

Despite not being terribly fluent in the genre of jazz or its' musicians, aside from those with an iconic status, I found this film to be incredibly captivating. It is refreshing to witness a realistic depiction of the struggle to live with and defeat a narcotic such as heroin. The pace is slow at times, yet this aids the sense of realism from the actors portrayals and settings. The entire cast was impressive, in particular, Elle Fanning. If this performance is any demonstration of what Fanning is capable as an actress then she should pursue more roles similar to it.

Engrossing portrayal of a jazz pianist's talent and struggles with heroin addiction. Told through the eyes of his adoring daughter, it carefully recreates the 1970s in the rundown, seedy section of Hollywood, and fully immerses you in that world. The acting was great, the costumes, music and locations were spot-on, but something was lacking for me; perhaps because the story was so relentlessly grim.

Well done - suggested double bill - Low Down and Lord Lucan
