This gripping coming-of-age drama follows a young ballet dancer, Claire, who has a distinctly troubled past as she joins a prestigious ballet company in New York. Claire is a beautiful, soulful and deeply emotionally wounded young woman who possesses an innate innocence and fragility while at the same time harboring self-destructive tendencies and a vaulting ambition. She is a transcendent ballerina, capable of reaching the sublime, but her inner torment and aspirations drive her in compelling, unforeseeable ways, especially when confronted with the manipulations of the company's unpredictable artistic director, and an unwelcome visitor from her past.

Claire Robbins. You're 21, and I'm confused. It says here you were apprenticed at the Pittsburgh Ballet at age 18, then took a leave of absence in that first year, and nothing since... Nowhere.
===
Mia: So, how many times have you auditioned for the Company?
-Today.
Shut up. Once? Fxck me. Not even gonna tell you how many times I tried out. Three. Jesus. … So, where you been dancing, the freaking Bolshoi or something?
-Just taking class. I had a nice situation at my studio. I cleaned it at night, and they let me study.
Okay, you're making it worse.
===
You seriously expect to entice new patrons into giving us hundreds of thousands of dollars when we're serving them a 99-cent glass of cat piss and a warmed-over production of "Giselle" as incentive? … Veuve Clicquot. We serve Veuve Clicquot if I have to give blow jobs on the corner to pay for it.
-You better get busy.

The little welcome-back challenge:
I am thrilled to have you all here... And at my mercy. … Let's begin. Pliés in first, demi demi full, port de bras and rise, same second … Port de bras back, fourth, no grand plié, but press through the feet and... Heels down. Lift up as you descend. Knees stretch. Use all the music. Barres away, please. ... Right, croisé, front. Step on the right on 1, arm on 2, followed by plié tendu 3 and 4. Développé croisé, plié through to arabesque 7, 8. Brushing through to attitude back, arabesque, pas de bourrée, fifth, up through the passé, allongé, pas de bourrée détendu, back.
Circle port de bras, arm open to the side, and returning to the fifth. Développé, 1, 2, effacé, plié, relevé, ***, forward, shifting here, here, settling back into fourth. Swivel and arabesque, stepping over, ending croisé, front. Step rond, returning back to the fourth, finishing with a double pirouette,and breathing back into fifth.

Paul: I am a man of vision. I am undeniable. I get what I want when I want.
===
What are you wearing tomorrow night? Something microscopic.
Patrice: Pisses me off. Why do the tiniest dresses cost the most?
-'Cause God hates women.
===
Daphne: Ballerina eye candy... We grace the patrons with our presence, and they feel like they're... "Brushing elbows with angels."
===
If we're gonna compete with ABT and City Ballet, we have to offer something besides the classics.
-I disagree. "Giselle" is good business. It is beloved.
And it's been done to death. I'm sorry, but you can't resuscitate that... thing with a defibrillator.
===
Miracles? They are for the ignorant, the poor, and the dying. We have in our possession a star who is ready to ascend. And if we make the right choices, we will rise with her.

Ballet is the ultimate optical illusion. We make effort appear effortless. We make difficult divine, and we make gravity... our bitch.
===
Do you see what I see? You need to understand your power... Your talent... Your beauty. Harness it. Love it. Use it. And never forget... you're mine.
===
I'm saying it is what is. Not everyone wins lottery. Take me. I want to be Beethoven.
Am I Beethoven? No. Not gonna happen.
===
What's wrong? Oh, preschool tuition. I feel your pain.
-I should have started saving before we pulled the damn goalie.
===
How funny. Where is it you're from, again? I think I blocked it out. Starts with a "P." Puh-puh. Puh-puh-puh-puh-puh...
-Pittsburgh.
Oh. Pittsburgh. Onomatopoeia, isn't it?
===
Primas don't travel in a pack! You got to start thinking for yourself, so think!

Has anyone ever died from menopause?
-A girl can dream.
Bitch. Her tits are two counts behind.

Transcendence:

Up! Up! Energy. Yes. Extend, Ashley. Grand jeté. Patrice, shoulders down. Ah, very nice, Kiira. You all see how Kiira extends? We all need to extend just like that. Extension, extension, extension. I sound like broken record. And up! Yes. Yeah. Good, Ross. Trey! You call that a Grand jeté? I've seen third-grade girls skip rope with more intensity. … Continue, please. Up! Good. Some artists are born, some are made,
and some emerge from an upside-down, deliciously kinky, terrifyingly mysterious forest of beauty and wonder. These artists never stop seeking and dreaming. They bewitch and confound us, make us question ourselves, and lead us to our ultimate goal, which is...? Transcendence.

This sort of punk-rock, lesbian witch, who's probably not really even a lesbian, was making us fucking hug each other like we were in some christian fucking youth group.
I thought at some point we were gonna sit in a big circle and bust out the dream journals. I mean, if I really wanted to get in touch with my unconscious, I would make an appointment with the shrink or go do plant medicine in the rainforest. Maybe I'd even sink to the depths of taking an acting class. Next thing you know, we'll be doing trust exercises and recounting various childhood traumas.
===
What's in it for me?
-Cocktail?
Two of my favorite things wrapped up into a single delicious word.

When are you gonna stop performing for me and start dancing? When are you gonna stop showing me how well you move... and start showing me why? I need artists. Do you understand? Thinking, feeling human beings. Not puppets. Not trained ponies. You want to be pretty? Fxck pretty. We're creating a piece about a young girl's journey from childhood to womanhood. From her innocence, through her sexual awakening, to her self-knowledge. It demands... authenticity. It demands our courage 'cause it demands our most human truth. … Whether you know it or not... there's a part of your body you have yet to discover. A fortress where you keep locked up everything. Believe me when I tell you I have come to lay siege... to that fortress... because I demand that truth. We are going to find it and bring it into the light, and we will find it together. Your truth, that dark secret you keep locked up inside your most... sacred spaces... hidden from yourself... especially from yourself.

The man only moves every other Thursday. But the boy watches from the window, and the man... waiting out on the gravel drive... The blue car comes. The lady hands the man an envelope through the open window. It's the only time the boy sees the man smile. One day... the boy goes to the man's desk to see what magic thing can give the man pleasure. The boy takes the envelope, and inside... he finds a check... for $76.31. And this is how the boy learns that the man and woman are not his mother and father at all. These are merely foster people paid to tolerate the boy. Imposters... paid to play house.

-What did you feel?
Excited. Hot. Like my skin was fxcking electric. I love that feeling. You're so close to life and death all at once. I liked the night raids the best. Never knowing who was on the other side of that door. And then that breach charge goes... boom.

You think this is a democracy? Everything and everyone here is to do with as I will!
===
Let me stop you right there. I think you have to understand that not everyone responds to this whole... downtown, power-dyke, "Vagina Monologue" thing you do, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's great. You're a genius. I love it. You know I do.
-Paul …
But I think once you have a bit more experience, you'll learn that sometimes artists have to be handled with a certain nuance, a certain delicacy, yes?
-Fine, Paul. She's your fxcked-up, little twist. You fix her.

"The Velveteen Rabbit."
-Yeah, I know that book. Stuffed rabbit comes to life.
He's loved so much he becomes real. By the time it happens... most of his fur's been loved off. He's lost his whiskers and his shape. He thinks he'll never be happy again. He doesn't know... ...that after everything bad that's happened... ...he could still be... ...blessed. I hope that can happen for me. That's -- that's what I want to be loved enough to become real.

I agree totally with the reviewer who called it a "disgustingly fascinating story"
It really is distasteful and the opposite of "feel good drama", but I could not quite abort and I watched the whole season as it is compelling in its sleaziness.

Sometimes I forget to look for a rating and in this case that's what happened. Then I felt really discouraged as the film unfolded, with full nudity, over and over, to the degree that the plot was lost in the exposure of young people who apparently forgot about telling a director they don't want to take off their clothes! We had to stop watching when the most talented prima ballet dancers were opting for stripping as a way to earn extra money! Let me underline my bias, as an older woman and a Christian, I don't mind watching films, however, I really value young people enough that I don't want to see them all naked! So this is just a warning to others like me, who want to see young people value themselves and not fall victim to the soft core porn world of sleazy film directors!

A very intense mini series from the producers of Breaking Bad, Sex and the City, and House of Cards. Highly recommended.

Didn't care for the dark family secret of Claire, the Cinderella, and it was never explained adequately why she, an untested newbie, was deemed to be a transcendent ballerina and chosen over other better talents to displace Kiira (wow! she could dance!) as prima ballerina of the prestigious NYC ballet company. Other than that, enjoyed the rest of the characters, ballet lessons, and the business end of a ballet company. Some lighter moments were provided by those over the top spiels by the despotic artistic director. Brought back memories from other excellent ballet dance films as Black Swan 2010, Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Knights 1985, Flash Dance 1983, TuTuMuch 2010 and Bob Fosse's All That Jazz 1979.

I love dance and love this serie. It is sad that they have not decided yet on a second season. All actors are top ballet dancers. The main actress shows great vulnerability depicting a childhood of abuse which is impacting the rest of her life. I Google the title and she won an award for that show.

This is a 2015 American television miniseries created by Moira Walley-Beckett.
It is a 482-minute-long 8-episode breathtaking, character-driven and stunningly captivating drama.
If you're interested in the dark side of the entertaining business, and ballet in particular, you should view this mesmerizing drama.
The film focuses on Claire, who has a distinctly troubled, emotionally wounded and sexually damaged past.
The storyline is so disgusting that you might stop viewing halfway through as I almost did.
However, I simply care about Claire and want to know what will happen to her in the end.
Paul Grayson, an Artistic Director of the American Ballet Company, is such a bullshit guy that you would love to hate.
Bryan Robbins, Claire's brother and a former Marine, is a devil.
Romeo, a homeless man who lives under Claire's building, is a mysterious and interesting guy with a peculiar sense of feeling the future and the mind.
Sergei, an owner of shadowy pole-dancing and lap-dancing club, is a ballet-enthusiast who understands Claire's talent but who operates a sex-slave ring on the side.
In a nutshell, it is a disgustingly fascinating story.
At least you should be able to enjoy modern ballet and how it is created.

Wasn't sure if I would enjoy a series about ballet; but was hooked right away by the intensity of the story-line. Some really dark elements that can only have been drawn from real-life experiences. I've known models who attested to the vicious cattiness involved within the inescapable social structure which is related to brutal competition (great casting- BTW). I'm only on the third episode, but have to say that so far this is pretty intriguing. Funny and dark, razor-sharp and some very very sexy people (duck upchuck excluded, but excused) make this a winner for me so-far. I hope they can sustain the appeal... On completion of this (limited?) series; I have to say- these are some seriously damaged people here! I'm not sure what the message of all this dark and jagged drama is,;but the acting is superb. Sarah Hay is a relative newcomer, but deserves further attention. Emily Tyra has played the consumate mean-girl on film before, and is intriguing here. This work was a little disturbing and it lingers in my mind like a bad dream.
