This novel is a very accurate depiction of events during the Civil War in Guatemala. The author has done her homework on the situation that transpired there. So many lost their lives in this war.

The main characters are well developed. The cultures of the indigenous groups in Guatemala are intertwined in this story.

The main characters are Will and Kate, and they are true heroes. Situations like this are not too far removed from the truth. The novel moves at a fast pace which makes the reader want to continue to the next chapter.

This is a great read especially if you have knowledge of the culture, history, and people of Guatemala.

Mixed review on this one. Some of the writing is overblown and flowery, and the Will-Kate relationship makes this feel more like a Harlequin romance. The concepts of alienation from one's home is interesting but explored a little superficially. The passages about language and Will's dexterity with it are lovely.
