Who ran all the way? Nobody in this movie. Despite the bewildering title, it is a bravura example of visually vertiginous direction, throwing on oddly angled shot after another at the viewer, very much in the manner of constructivism and even cubism, but without the high-contrast lighting of expressionism. Not that the lighting and the fine shadings and edges it discloses don't constitute an imagic symphony; the DP is James Wong Howe, after all, who by this time in his long, lovely career couldn't make a less-than-ravishing movie if he tried. But the constant stream of eye-candy can't fully compensate for a rather thin premise and not very convincing development. The movie is The Desperate Hours in a lower-middle-class setting and with a lower budget, because of which it is much more a film noir, i.e., the story of a loser who keeps on losing until he dies. Since the loser is played by a winner who became a loser for no fault of his own, it gains immensely in poignancy. Excellent, atypical score by Franz Waxman, who was much more chamelionic than, say, his obvious colleagues and contemporaries Alfred Newman and Victor Young. --Ray Olson

This was John Garfield’s last film and it is a great performance by a great actor. The director and screenwriters were not properly credited in the initial release because they were all Blacklisted by HUAC during McCarthyism and the Red Scare. One of the actual screenwriters was Dalton Trumbo, but the studios thought it was written by Guy Endore. Watch the film and decide if this film has some kind of brainwashing like the McCarthyites claimed. Shelly Winters and Wallace Ford demonstrate what great actors they were. Garfield died shortly after this film was released. Some say his death at 39 was accelerated by the right-wing witchhunts looking for commies hiding around every corner.

"He ran all the way", 1951, stars John Garfield and Shelley Winters. This crime drama is preposterous, idiot, and makes no sense to me on any level. But when the film was released Garfield was praised. Watch the film and try to have anything but scoffing as your main opinion.

Top notch noir reminiscent of THE DESPERATE HOURS, but more complex and rewarding.
