A journey through the 1980s and beyond: the story of a band, an era and how one small gathering of outsiders in London shaped the entire world's view of music and fashion. The film is not only a fascinating, often hard-hitting social and cultural document of the time, but a brutally honest story of how friendships can be won, lost and ultimately regained.

I recommend this film for fans of music documentaries and especially those with an interest in '80s music. Before watching it, the only thing I knew about Spandau Ballet was "True," their one big U.S. hit. The band had additional hits at home in the U.K. I thought the documentary started off a bit choppy and took longer to get to their success than it should have, but ultimately I enjoyed learning a lot more about the band, its evolution and implosion. Shortening up the description of the band members' and the band's very early years could have made it a more satisfying 90 minutes rather than 111 minutes in length.

Remember Spandau Ballet? I couldn't name a tune, but when I heard True and Gold - I recognized those songs. They were part of the new romantic music coming out of London (very pretty boys) who were keen on their music, their looks and images. Their competitors at the time were Duran Duran and Culture Club. This DVD interviews the band members and they talk about growing up in London suburbs during the 1960s. They were all working class lads and they speak of their musical influences - Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder. Talk about their their evolution from local band to international pop stars. They were very successful, but as usual had internal differences. One band member wrote all the songs and near the end of their music career, he sued the other band members for exclusive rights to the royalty revenues and won. Caused a great divide and the band fell apart. Sad to see good friends becoming bitter enemies. Interesting to see the music scene of the 1980s / 1990s. They participated in LiveAid and the big Christmas charity song. Shows the drain/strain of super success and the fall out of lifelong friendships that it cost.
