Based on audaciously true events. In 1959 Bucharest, five high-ranking Jewish members of the Communist party staged a bank heist that baffled the repressive regime and left the public in an uproar. Their motives were never known. Having been captured, arrested, and sentenced to death, the unusual gang of so-called criminals is given one last punishment before facing the execution squad: reenact the heist for the benefit of a Communist propaganda film.

Searched for "movie within a movie" after watched "The Disaster Artist 2018" and found this. As the credit rolled, the background showed a montage of the film's real life Jewish gang and their fates. Amazing historic event that was dreadfully entertaining.

A fine movie about sheer craziness - and it's true.

Very well acted, wonderful dialogue.

The protagonists are amazing at characterization. Great glimpse of Romania, which not as abundantly featured in Holocaust movies.

Rarely do actual events outside of the usual US/Europe/Austl are made into films but I was surprised of this specially coming from a least known country like Romania. Quite entertaining. A nice slice of Jewish culture spread into it.

Another film illustrating the absolute stupidity of anti-Semitism. Countries prosecute and otherwise demean individuals who were heroes at one point but then become an embarrassment because they are Jews. Well acted by Mark Strong and Vera Farmiga.

Excellent movie about life behind the iron curtain in those lofty days after WWII for idealists of the 1940s. Resistance fighters against the Germans become state criminals. Fine movie.

Look it's Dumi's birthday. He's 40 years old. I hope he won't be angry with me if I don't wish him a long life. 20 years ago, how many of us thought we'd live into our 40's? The sheer idea of a long life back then was a kind of betrayal. Razvan, what's your best memory in the last 10 years? Or can you think of one good thing since the end of the war? The day Stalin died?
-Oh, shut up.
What else is there for us? If we pull it off, great. We're laughing, at them. If we get caught, sure, it's the end of the show. But what an ending?

They were discussing a couple of pupils in his class who were being persecuted because their parents were former land-owners.

Intro:

During World War II, the anti-Nazi resistance in Romania was mainly organized by the Communist Party. A number of young Jews joined the cause, believing their freedom would come from the Soviet Union. The Red Army didn't free, but enslaved the country, along with the whole Eastern and Central Europe. An iron-fist regime was installed. Former Jewish partisans became part of the governing elite. Their positions started to erode until, by the last years of the 50's, they were being systematically removed from positions of power and influence.

Based on a true story.

- You wouldn't believe the treasures they have hiding up there. The treasures they have hiding up there.
That's the sentence that sent us away.
-My neighbor, Comrade Ristea has a treasure hidden up in his attic. Probably gold.

Mr. Zilber?
-What?
If you like listening to classical music so much, why do you listen to it on 'Voice of America' with all the static and the noise? Why don't you just listen to it on an official station?
-On an official station, my dear boy, even Brahms becomes propaganda.
