Publishers Weekly critique is rather harsh, given what is being published as // sci fi \\ today, truly tenuous. Overall, this was a relatively interesting sf read.
Certainly not in the same category as Iain Banks' Player of Games, or Sterling's Drakon, or Ted Chiang's short story, Understand [and do be sure to see Ted's movie, Arrival, truly outstanding!!!!!], but few books are.
Still, I would rate this an entertaining read with superior writing, and Ms. Goldstein ascribes refreshingly realistic motivations to her characters.
[I'm guessing the author is a fan of Kate Mosse's book, Sepulchre?]
