Suspenseful and entertaining horror story....you've got secrets, lies and ghosts...a creepy hotel...creepy people...

A gripping mystery ghost story narrated between the past and present of a family suffering from what can only be described as a curse. The author keeps you guessing until the very end who's the cause of the trouble and if it's possibly supernatural.

I picked this up because I really, really love "The Winter People" and this seemed to be going along the same lines. More time jumps this time but family secrets and weird happenings and bizarre crimes. In this story though the slow burn worked right up until a point where it feels like the author ran out of time. There was a lot of quick work to establish links between different parts of the story and then everything just rolls down a hill to its conclusion, which is something I had suspected.

The earlier part is really good. In one time line we have sisters Rose and Sylvie, the latter obsessed with writing Alfred Hitchcock letters and going to be a movie star. Sylvie vanishes and Rose's daughter, Amy, and her friends spent a summer in the 80s trying to uncover the story behind Sylvie's disappearance. There is far more there than they bargained for and that follows into present day. If it sounds like there's a lot going on there sort of is. Aside from the time jumps there are multiple point of view shifts as well.

It started strong, I just wish it had stuck the landing

I enjoyed this book--it had a very creepy vibe going on--but I felt like the ultimate resolution wasn't terribly satisfying. I wanted a bit more explanation of what was going on and it felt a bit rushed and details were left out that might have made me feel like the story was a bit more complete in the end.

Really liked this story about a family curse and how it affects the cursed and those around them. Action goes between current time, recent history, and way back in the 50s. It's all tied together with an outdated, decrepit motel with a replica of the Tower of London. It's about friendship, family, secrets kept and those revealed, and protecting those you love. Fast-paced and enthralling.

This book kept me engrossed the entire time--I couldn't put it down and when I had to (sleep, work, etc...) I couldn't wait to get back to it! it kept me guessing as to what would happen next. Definitely a must read if you're into spooky, creepy, supernatural books.

Have a hard time to put this book down, mystery suspense with touch of supernatural, one of the best books in a long time, for me anyway,

Another creepy read that kept me guessing. In the shadow of an old motel stands a tower that is falling to pieces. Once two young girls played there while their parents ran the motel. Now only one sister remains, looking for clues in the past and finding only more questions. This author makes reading with the lights on mandatory!

I was ultra-excited to read this book based on how much I loved McMahon's previous title The Winter People. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed. In fact, I think it was even better! Just a few words that I would use to describe this book: chilling, atmospheric, spooky, scary, twisty, and just plain wonderful. In short: I couldn't put this one down. Try to grab this one in time for Halloween!

If you like thrillers with a supernatural edge then Jennifer McMahon does not disappoint.
