While well made and well-acted, it was rather depressing to watch. Intentionally so, but still difficult to get through.

I quite liked this movie. Definitely should be considered for dedicated Sherlock Holmes fans, especially those appreciating the original Conan-Doyle stories. The acting is well-done, and I enjoyed the screenwriter's imagining an older Holmes. On the downside, the non-linear presentation makes following the plot a bit of a challenge, with many flashbacks in both time and location. It's all a little over-done and unnecessarily confusing imo. And Holmes fans who prefer the modern Cumberbatch Holmes (BBC) and Robert Downy Jr's theatrical Holmes may find the story of an elderly Holmes a little slow going. In the plot Holmes is 93, having retired and living at his beach cottage in the Dover the past 30 years, and enjoying his hobbies of bee-keeping and gardening. Senile dementia has been setting in over the years, and he realizes it. The royal jelly -- a product from his bee hives -- is no longer working , so he travels to Japan to obtain another anti-dementia remedy, a prickly-ash derivative, only available there. He wants to forestall the disease until he can record for posterity his last case; one he considers to be his worst failure. Occurring 30 years prior, a young husband asks Holmes for detective help to discover the reason for his wife's unusual behavior. She seems obsessed with playing an off-beat musical instrument, the glass armonica, and with her gypsy-like instructor. The husband wants to know why.

In a hyphenated word....ultra-boring. Not worth the watch no matter how much of a fan you might be.

If you're a Sherlock Holmes fan, you will want to see this. Ian McKellen does a great job as the elderly Holmes.

Loved this wonderful movie...putting another perspective on the infamous Sherlock an older man . Very realistic, interesting and fun! Highly recommend!

Absolutely loved this movie! The character of Holmes as an aging man, and the difficulties that sometimes accompany that phase of life, is an interesting concept. We don't think of him as older, forgetful, or anything other than at the top of his game. A bit slow in places but well worth the watch.

Ian McKellen stars in what is a very different kind of Sherlock Holmes story. This time the mystery has to be drawn out of Sherlock's aging head and it is feeling not logic that rules in the end. This tale is much quieter and slower than your average Sherlock Holmes story. That means viewers looking for something to tide them over between the edgier and more action packed BBC seasons starring Benedict Cumberbatch will be disappointed.

But this is a charming movie and McKellen plays his role as a conflicted and struggling Sherlock to a T.

Slow-starting; his remembering is also merged in so that it takes a couple times to understand when he's in present time as opposed to going back to the unsolved case that niggles at him. On one level, this is about a proud, rational detective determined to use his fading powers of logic to win one last time. On another level, it's about a shy man who found it safer to live in his cerebral mindset than take the risk of love/developing his relational skills. Fortunately for him, people enter his life who manage to upset that mindset, in a good way. Ian McKellen is excellent at portraying a 93-year old man who wants to manage his last years gracefully. The actor who plays the little boy, Roger, does a good, sensitive job as they grow into a friendship.

[Holmes explains a series of deductions about his last client]

Roger: But all that just told you he was married. How did you know he'd come to see you about his wife?

Sherlock Holmes: [smiles] Because when you're a detective, and a man comes to see you, it's usually about his wife.

Roger: You're not going to die.
Holmes: Roger. I'm 93.
Roger: I had a great uncle who lived to be 102.
Holmes: Well, then, that seals my fate. What are the odds that you would know two men who would live that long?
Roger: Well, I didn't actually know him.

Holmes: Ah. The iris. Amazing resilience. Enough light and they will grow
in the most uninhabitable regions, desert, cold, rock. Why do you suppose it is that something as small and insignificant as the iris should be so much stronger than we are? Perhaps they're less affected by what goes on around them.

Ann: And is that enough?
Holmes: It can be. If one is so fortunate as to find a place in the world. And another soul with whom one's loneliness can reside.

Roger: If you can't remember, then why couldn't the case have been a success like Dr. Watson wrote it?
Holmes: Because it was my last case. And if I'd brought it to a successful conclusion, I wouldn't have left the profession and spent 35 years here, in this place, away from the world! I chose exile for my punishment, but what was it for? I must have done something terribly wrong...And I've no evidence of what it was. Only pain, guilt... Useless, worthless feelings!

Ann: The dead are not so very far away. They're just...On the other side of the wall. It's us, on this side, who are, all of us so...
Holmes: Alone? I have been alone...All my life. But with the compensations
of the intellect.

Due to possibility of spoilers, suggest not to read quotes in general until after watching the film:

Roger: What is Royal Jelly?
Holmes: It's a special secretion of the worker bees. And it's royal because?
Roger: It feeds the queen.
Holmes: Bravo. It was the jelly's curative powers that prompted my monograph, The Value of Royal Jelly with Further Comments on the Potential Health Benefits of Prickly Ash.
Roger: What's that?
Holmes: Prickly Ash, … Well, in Japanese, Hire Sansho is the common word for Zanthoxylum piperitum. It's used to treat various degenerative diseases. Anaemia, circulatory conditions... Arthritis and... Hm. What's it called? Oh. Senility. That was a witticism.

Nov 20, 2015

Holmes: But surely it can't do me ill.
Doctor: In and of itself, no.
Holmes: You mean there might be side effects?
Doctor: Perhaps.
Holmes: Such as?
Doctor: Hope.

Holmes: … human nature was a mystery that logic alone could not illuminate. I had successfully deduced the facts of her case, but I had failed to grasp their meaning. Never had I felt such an incomprehensible emptiness within myself. Only then did I begin to understand how utterly alone I was in the world.

Holmes: The first thing to know is there's no danger. Bees aren't interested in harming you. Their only concern is self-preservation.
Roger: From people?
Holmes: They're much too clever for people. Their enemies are the weather, disease and predators. The wasp is their particular antagonist. Did you know that one wasp can kill 40 honey bees in under a minute?
