Matthew Spender may have thought, "Oh, I'll just dig a little bit in some old letters and get to know my parents a tad bit better," but WOW, what he wandered into! This memoir is remarkably candid as well as well-written and thoughtful. There are secrets in most families, but the Spenders had secrets under secrets under secrets so that as Matthew digs through the layers, the reader's eyes will widen and widen and widen. Terrific!

Matthew Spender says that "this book started as an imaginary conversation with the ghosts of two parents whom I never challenged while they were alive". Remarkably frank but also without too much rancour it's a fascinating look at a certain time and milieu.
