Tells the story of a young woman who leaves one lover only to drift into a relationship with another. Using the architecture of Rome as a backdrop for the couple's doomed affair, the director reaches the apotheosis of his modernist style, returning to his favorite themes: alienation and the difficulty of finding connections in an increasingly mechanized world.

A rather awkward film, and boring too - even for those with patience to watch 'artistic' films. There were several boring and rather pointless scenes of the stock market. The end of the film is not much more than a sequence of photographs.
The most outrageous part occurred about half an hour into the film, when one of the characters (the main character) dresses up in black-face and does a mock-African style dance, moments later another says "lets stop playing negroes" and just a few minutes later refer to (black) Africans as "monkeys"(!!); I suppose that was they way things were then (but still!).

I'm no film scholar, and I don't pretend to be. But I know what I like. And brother, it ain't this. A slow burning film about a confused, and confusing, mostly deadpan woman, who likes teasing and playing mind games with men. If I enjoyed something like this, I would've stayed married. 2½ stars for the interesting artistic cinematography (what WAS that spaceship shaped building in film's beginning when Vittoria looked out of Riccardo's window?!?)

Vittoria: "Two people shouldn't know each other too well if they want to fall in love. But then maybe they shouldn't fall in love at all."
