I originally dismissed this title until I read the other Star Wars novel by the same author, Rogue One. Then I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed.

Its a darker, grittier & less optimistic tale of the faceless & thankless foot soldiers of the Rebellion.
It's fantastic.
To me it reads like an Age of Rebellion role playing game. The main character and his squad are the PCs and scenes are different encounters the narrator (GM) places them in. some encounters are combat encounters while others are social / political challenges, the flashbacks are 1-1 sessions when the other players aren't at the table. It was very inspirational for my own games.
Some of the timeline jumping is a little jarring but I got over it eventually. In a galaxy of thousands of aliens and fantastical powers it's refreshing to read from the perspective of a ignorant backwater nobody who has never heard of a Jedi, and doesn't know the racial names of the aliens in his company. Not everyone in the galaxy can use the force, has ridiculous luck or is a Princess and has the do things the hard way. Twilight Company has to do things the hard way, and not everyone makes it out alive. The main character's growth from a jaded cynic is subtle, but powerful and the message that the Rebellion wasn't about military pursuits but inspiring the hearts of the people was captivating.

I felt the story got bogged down and did not have enough action. It did not captivate me. Maybe my expectations are too high with the new Star Wars Canon.
