In the fateful month of March 2000, shortly after opening a hugely successful show in New York that unveiled the more nefarious financial connections of Presidential candidate George W. Bush, the hugely ambitious Conceptual artist Mark Lombardi was found hanged in his studio, an apparent suicide. With museums lining up to buy his work, and the fame he had sought relentlessly at last within his reach, speculation about whether his death was suicide or murder has titillated the art world ever since. Lombardi was an enigma who was at once a compulsive truth-teller and a cunning player of the art game, a political operative and a stubborn independent, a serious artist and a Merry Prankster, a metaphysicist if not a scientist.

Lombardi's spidery, elusive diagrams describing the evolution of the shadow-banking industry from a decades-old alliances between intelligence agencies, banking, government and organized crime, may have made him unique in art history as the only artist whose primary subject, the CIA, has turned around and studied him and his art work. Exhaustively researched, this is the first comprehensive biography of this immensely contradictory and brilliantly original artist.

Pretty mind blowing book about the artist Mark Lombardi, who made diagrams connecting money laundering ( through banks ), the CIA, the Mafia, politics and drug smuggling. The artist committed suicide in 2000 despite being at the peak of his career in the art world. Read this book it details the " criminalization of the financial system " ( or the shadow economy superseding the legit one ). Contains a wealth of information about what is really going on behind the scenes.

Easily 30-starred review!!!!!
[Update: 10/28/15: The Robert Redford movie, Truth, based upon Mary Mapes' book, Truth and Duty has a tie-in to this book: the wealthy Texas lady, and supposed hardcore liberal, Karen Farenheldt, who steered Mapes to the fabricated documents of the Bush fabricated military record, also was the conduit for some of the data to Mark Lombardi - - was she a true gem, or CIA stooge and plant?]
// Goldstone points out that more than 20,000 of Lombardi's notes and citations were seized by the FBI, and the revelation of the CIA's connection to the Whitney Museum and MoMA-two prominent buyers of Lombardi's work-is certainly enough to give one pause \\
Normally, I have to read hundreds or thousands of books and reports to garner or capture one salient fact or datum, but Ms. Goldstone's book is a absolute treasure trove of factual data, some refreshes your memory, much is new - - if Ms. Goldstone isn't a forensic finance expert, she sure could have fooled me, and written in a most intellectually elegant fashion, similar to a top-flight court attorney!
Originally, I admit to thinking that Mark's death was suicide, but after reading this book, I am convinced there too many discrepancies, too many irregularities, to believe such - - plus his files. Just far too many interlocks surrounding his death.
Great job by Ms. Goldstone.
Ms. G. does an outstanding job of presenting, in verbal description, what Mr. Lombardi's art was really about.

[And the patterns literally jump off the page and hit you in the head: Santos Traficante had a 20% ownership in Murchison Oil; Alan Quasha had a 20% in {George W. Bush's} Harken Energy; Khalid bin Mahfouz - - banker to the Saudi royal family and Bush family connection - - had a 20% ownership stake in BCCI!]
FYI: Publishers Weekly critic was most weak - - Ms. Goldstone very nicely and cogently lays out the information which Mark was drawing was frequently unique and not in the public domain! She ties it most lucidly together - - and as far as being unable to name the murderer - - as long as the NYPD, or LAPD, or other police departments, continue to destroy the crime scene and any evidence, such will be the case!
