In this affectionate story of small town life in upstate New York, Sully, a fitfully employed 60-year-old construction worker, is a cheerful curmudgeon who has made a lifetime of bad decisions. He unexpectedly has a chance to make right some of them when his estranged son and grandson drop back into his life.

I think this is one of Paul's most under rated performances. He is wonderful in it.

Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy are star performers! The story was real and these two actors were real.

Really a poignant, down to earth story about the pitfalls of Paul Newman's aging, working slob, everyman character, (and I meant no offense to anyone with that comment -- I too am an aging working slob, but not an everyman, and I saw a lot of myself in his character) and the sorry regrets and realizations of how dysfunction carries on from generation to generation in families unless faced head-on and dealt with. Newman is outstanding here. Written and directed straight from the heart (although I didn't care for the ending). Jessica Tandy's final film.

(Sully is chaining a snow-blower to his landlady's fence, and covering it with a tarp) Miss Beryl: "Do you mind my asking what you are doing?" Donald "Sully" Sullivan: "I'm keeping the guy that I stole this from from stealing it back." Miss Beryl: "Donald, does it ever bother you that you haven't done more with the life God gave you?" Donald "Sully" Sullivan: "Not often... Now and then."
