At work, L.A. Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson is a woman in charge. Got a suspect to grill, a case to crack, a murderer about to walk? Call Brenda in and watch the fireworks. But at home, well, that's another story. Join the squad as Sanchez looks after an orphaned boy, Tao goes undercover as a biker dude, Provenza and Flynn date airline attendants (turns out one of them has a corpse in her bathtub), and Brenda finds her family Christmas rudely interrupted by crime.

The "Special Features"
segments on the disc explains that the plot lines are taken from actual LAPD cases. The former LA prosecutor is a technical adviser which explains the strangeness of some of the episodes. Truth is stranger than fiction.

as these series go on they have to outdo themselves and get tunnel vision as to the cartoonish violence, have to go over the top at some point. Once was a good series. The tiresome high calorie candy shtick as Kyra turns into a skeleton is kind of ridiculous (unless they show her bulimia which they don't because it's a real audience turn off); marketing research shows the way to ingratiate your show with the female audience is to show women with food issues but in an endearing way--not gross (like the way Oprah's audience reveled in her endlessly self-indulgent obsession with her own weight); brenda's low low cut dresses at the crime scene and the whiny temper tantrums also not very credible for a top cop. She vamps to con the cons into confessing but at scene of crime with only the dead body and male cops, who is she fooling?

Kyra Sedgewick is absolutely fantastic as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, it almost feels as though the role was written exclusively for her. The rest of the cast is equally as good, and this show is very well scripted. I would highly recommend this show to fans of police dramas. This show will not leave you feeling disappointed in the least.

Provenza: I hate to interrupt, but it is the holiday, and any minute now we're going to be bombarded with suicides, and I don't want to see this dinner go to waste.
Mr. Johnson: Amen!

Chief Pope: You know, it's a little early for you to start acting like I don't matter anymore. I mean, you may be right; but then again, you may be wrong.
