Not a bad book! I skimmed through in some places, and ended up getting caught up in the story. The writing style isn't too "fancy". More of a plot-driven book. I would recommend.

This thriller about a hiking trip gone wrong is a fast-paced, fun read deepened by good character work.

Gwen, a burned out black social worker who doubts her physical capabilities; Oscar, a macho Latino real estate agent with skewed priorities; and Todd, a wealthy white lawyer in the midst of a mid-life crisis join Tracy, a half-Japanese, half-white physical trainer with survivalist leanings on a hike through the Sierra Nevadas. Things go very wrong, and soon the group is struggling with moral dilemmas and their own survival. All three of the point-of-view characters are much more than their race, though it affects the way the deal with the challenges, and they grow in satisfying ways during their suspenseful journey. Gwen and Todd are especially well-written (Oscar is less fleshed-out) and the story is suspenseful and entertaining while making you think. Revoyr also writes with clear-eyed and up-to-the-minute accuracy about today's marijuana wars in the US national parks and their racial realities, adding a voice that thinks intelligently about race to the legalization debate.

While it gets exciting, the story takes far too long to get going. No need for background reports on all the hikers.
