"And you call this s*** rape, but I think rape's fun."-Tyler, the Creator, "Blow"
If you follow hip-hop at all, you remember the hype and controversy when the loose California collective exploded onto the scene in 2011. Sometime compared to Wu-Tang because they recorded both as a group and as individuals, they were internet savvy, had a strong brand (a sometimes weird mix of skate punk culture, ironic preppy fashion, and juvenile, vulgar antics), and some pretty good music. If anything, their brand and image was often stronger than their music, despite some great moments, like Tyler's breakout "Yonkers" single. 2015's "Cherry Bomb" is his 4th album and feels like his attempt to break out of the Odd Future world and into the mainstream or, at least as mainstream as someone whose songs are published by Golf Wang Steak Sauce can be. This is an album with big guests like Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Pharrell and it has its moments, but often feels jumbled and uneven. His lyrics are less problematic here than on previous releases, but it's still not one for the kids.
