Hats off to Hillary Swank as Kate, supported by a competent cast. It's a touching portrayal of a person challenged by a progressively debilitating condition like ALS. I'm sure there's lots of uneasy questions, even regrets, that ruminate through Kate's mind as her health shuts down the abilities of her body and along with it maybe her dreams, aspirations, even her well-earned talents. I won't say too much about the scene between Kate and Bec, her caregiver, who begins to play on the piano, other than it's crushing. You almost don't want to know what that would feel like for Kate. And, sadly, as the story unfolds, I can begin to understand some of the decisions that Kate is forced to consider; it's absolutely tragic. It highlights questions like 'who will be around for the long-term and who will advocate for me when circumstances change for the worse?' Recently, I noticed a man at the Eureka branch library who was around Kate's age; his hands trembled involuntarily as he focused to turn each page of the newspaper, page by page. It required such effort. He was in great shape otherwise, so it seemed like his condition was still in its relatively early stages. I wondered if he may have been in the construction field. A film like this would undoubtedly make one ponder thoughts such as 'did my life reach the potential that I privately expected for myself?,' designating a health care power-of-attorney, and even considering options like CA Assemblyman David Chiu's 'End of Life Option' Act (2016), in which ALS is a terminal condition for 50% of those affected within 3 years and 80% within 5 years. And reconciling these notions aren't spur-of-the-moment answers, as I was confronted with on a recent visit to the ER. Although Swank is stellar in this film, it could have been strengthened by some editing, like the scene with the baby. In my opinion, a stronger film overall is 'Still Alice' with the sophisticated Julianne Moore.

Wish that, all dying patients be able to make their life-ending decisions. It was a well-crafted presentation of a beautiful spirit who was trapped inside a deteriorating body. The caregiver carried a good heart, which not everybody could see.

Great movie on a real life illness and Hilary Swank deserves an award once again. Both my husband and I cried which is very seldom at least 4 times during this movie.

I really really loved this movie so much, that I watched It 3 times. It was not only a tragic case of a woman suffering from ALS as it was entertaining. It touched my heart because I knew a beautiful and strong woman who also died from this awful disease. Hilary Swank was so great in her role as the pianist with ALS and I truly enjoyed Emmy Rossum' s quirky personality in her role as the caregiver and also her growth to maturity. They are what helped make this movie so great!

Rather predictable. However it is worth it just to see Hilary Swank's tremendous acting job. She is a master at her craft.

Hilary Swank plays a woman with ALS. Emmy Rossum , pretty much plays her character from Shamless. Good performances all around.
