SUMMARY: In this installment of the Bear series, Bear counts to five by noticing the things around him in nature.

ILLUSTRATIONS: As always, these Bear pictures are colorful, soft, fun, warm and fuzzy. But because this book is tailored to the littlest ones, some of the illustrations become too busy for the young reader to find the correct number of items.

THE GOOD: It is fun to count with an old friend as Bear walks through the forest. The story encourages the reader to find more things to count than what is named. The book introduces new vocabulary such as muskrats, dragonfly, aspen tree, lily pads, and crawdads. And although this book only counts to five, this makes for a shorter sitting time for the little wiggly ones. It is easier to keep their attention than if this book went all the way up to ten
THE NOT AS GOOD: The flow of the rhyming is pretty rough in this one.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Although this is advertised for grades pre-k to 2nd, I really feel like counting to five is better suited for ages 2-5. Past that age, kids are counting far beyond numbers 1-5.
