A groundbreaking narrative accomplishment, Sphinx is an erotic, genderless love story that delves into the nightclubs and cabarets of afterhours Paris exploring the relationship between a nameless narrator and A***, a dancer from America. Excellent book! I think some of the confusion over some other reviews is the fact of this narrative being a deep meditation on how the protagonist realizes after the loss of A**** that the lover was never really enjoyed as a person, only as a mirror. The loss of A*** forces the protagonist into some deep reflection on what the protagonist actually is doing with his or her life.
This is what Barthes terms a "Writerly" work - one where the reader needs to bring themselves to bear on the text, work out it's meaning, and essentially "co-write" the work.

Interesting idea, but mediocre writing.
