Well written and an unusual plot with an unexpected twist near the end.

Adelina is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. There weren’t many survivors and those who survived were left with mysterious markings. The fever’s survivors are rumored to have powerful gifts and have become known as the Young Elites.

This novel is the first of a moving series which is just the book for someone who wants a good read.

“Some hate us, think us outlaws to hang at the gallows.
Some fear us, think demons to burn at the stake,
Some worship us, think us children of the gods.
But all know us.”

After the deadly Blood Fever ravaged their world, some bear the scars of the illness in more ways than one. Many survivors develop powers beyond imagining, and now they are hunted by the Inquisition, seen as an abomination. They call themselves the Young Elites.
Adelina is one such Elite, cast out by her family for her changed features and rumored powers. Taken in by Enzo and the Dagger Society—a secret organization that gives sanctuary to the Blood Fever survivors, her powers develop in secret. But the Inquisition is on the hunt, and they will stop at nothing to destroy every Young Elite in their path.

With lush world-building and a complex cast of characters, Marie Lu delivers a truly masterful beginning to a science-fantasy series like no other. Equal parts X-Men and Renaissance Europe, “The Young Elites” is a memorable tale of antiheroes, individuality, and vengeance that will leave a lasting impression on fans of both fantasy, dystopia, and science fiction.

Definitely a great read. Adelina was one of the most memorable characters you will ever meet, and her darker side definitely left me cheering her on throughout, and the rest of the cast had also fit in very well with her character. Although the ending was a little bit sad, it was a strong ending, leaving me anxiously waiting to read the sequel. Overall, I give this book a 9/10 and a "Would Strongly Recommend Reading."

Decent read. Probably suffered from the fact that I have been heavily sleep deprived lately. Interesting concept - though I found the Epilogue more intriguing than most of the book. So, maybe the sequels will be more interesting.

The author's note at the end indicates that Lu intended to write a villain's story rather than a hero's story in this book. I can't say that I found Adelina all that villainous. Most of the 'bad' things she did were in response to blackmail or by accident. The romance with Enzo wasn't thoroughly enough developed for me to get invested in it. The more interesting relationships by far were with her sister and with Rafaelle.

I will read the rest of the series because it has potential. As noted earlier, I'm interested in the characters introduced in the Epilogue and I'm actually quite interested in Violetta (the sister) and what happens to this world as a whole.

Good but not great.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.
