Malena is a beautiful movie and one of those that has a little bit of everything, some funny moments, some emotional ones, and also features gorgeous and talented Monica Bellucci. This movie propelled Monica into international movie star. One of Monica's best!

Trite, boring movie. Cinema Paradiso director tries for another gem but making a movie with a perfume model (Monica Bellucci) either in or being talked about in every single scene is risky when you didn't hire someone who can act. The boy is not so great either. Bellucci, as an undeveloped character, wears the same unhappy expression for the duration until a disturbing and totally
jarring scene of female violence. The director, Giuseppe Tornatore, chose the cast but when Harvey Weinstein is involved charm can be lost and Cinema Paradiso had loads of it. This was a waste of time.

Superb performance by Monica. The screenplay captured the atmosphere of a bygone era.

Difficult to review. Like a fantasy piece of a young boys vivid imagination & sexual awareness. Subtitles thankfully, helped cut through the rapid, shouting Italian I found better to mute. Funny, sad, bitter remembrances of WWII Italy.

This movie is about a lot more than just a boy's puberty and infatuation with an older woman. The lead actress playing Malena is gorgeous by the way. She also has a very sour and dour expression. Her facial expression carries very much the frustration, annoyance, and bad feelings associated with being a sex object and humiliated. IMHO, this movie is an indictment more against society, men & women, who were jealous or coveted a woman's beauty, who's only sin was being pretty. She really was not hussy. Then, because of how society treated her, society forces her into prostitution. For which, the same society then punishes her.

This movie has 2 heroes. The husband who goes and gets her back. The boy who is the only one to think of her properly, not believe the rumors about her and have respect for her. Even though the boy shows little courage in most of the film, he does good. The boy commits the act of true love. (Don't want to be a spoiler.)

This was really a great movie.
