Maggie Sheridan is a semi-retired, former '60s rock singer. She seems resigned to a life lived on a crumbling country estate, ruminating about her past. Everything changes when a botched robbery leaves her friend Sir Charles Stafford dead and one of his prized pantings missing. Determined to retrieve the masterpiece and find the killer, Maggie plunges into the dark underworld of the art trade. Posing as a wealthy Polish countess, she sets off on a treacherous path from Ireland to London to New York and back again. Meanwhile, Sebastian, the troubled son of Sir Charles, embarks on his own path of discovery. Where the two trails meet, life begins to imitate art to deadly effect.

Not a real winner for Mirren, though it's clearly been designed as a vehicle for her, giving her a strong lead during the earlier days of her successful TV cop series. There are longueurs that verge on the puzzling, and the director unravels the plot's convolutions with only middling skill

A somewhat interesting tale which is a bit too long.

Oh, well. Just in case we needed proof that no matter how brilliant the performer—in the immortal words of the great playwright Lloyd Richards, “it is about time that the piano realizes it did not write the concerto”. This particular Steinway, Dame Helen Mirren, may not have written this concerto, but she certainly decided to play it. Bad idea. My guess is that after all the grande dames she was doing, she really just wanted to play a dame. But perhaps a formerly burned out blues singer masquerading as a Polish Countess posing as an art dealer to avenge the murder of her best friend by the Irish underworld (pant, pant) was even beyond her range. And if the above encapsulation of the plot makes you the LEAST bit curious…I haven’t expressed myself well enough.

Terrific mystery--never knew what was going to happen next. Helen Mirren is excellent as usual.

Depressing, dark movie; not even Hellen Mirren was able to catch our attention.

This is a great Murder mystery. I normaly don't check them out but what a great thirller. Lead role is Helen Mirren (the Queen, Red, ect). Both parts one and two ARE on the same disc. After part one, go to Scene Selection and forward to part two. I was heart broken when I thought it was only part one. Sit back and enjoy this edge of your seat thriller!
