Detective Carl Morck has received a bottle that holds an old and decayed message written in blood. It's a cry for help from two young brothers, tied and bound in a boathouse by the sea. After floating in the ocean for years before turning up, the bottle sat forgotten, unopened, on a police department windowsill, before the seal was cracked and the gruesome message, written in Danish, was analyzed. Could it be real? Who are these boys, and why weren't they reported missing?

Is Detective Carl Merck less crotchety than previous? Seems so. He still has trouble with Assad and Rose but a team appears to be developing. In this chapter of the tales of Department Q, even Carl can say his assistants are beginning to show promise. Many years after a terrible crime occurs, a kidnapping and murder, a bottle floats to the shores of Scotland. It's even longer for the difficult-to-read message inside to be found. More time until it lands on Carl's cold case desk. Someone may be using the isolationist tendencies of some religious groups as a foundation for a career of crime. The chase is on. It pulls you in. Great tale but a touch below the first two.

My favorite so far in a dark but always exciting series. The narrator is excellent and the writing is tight.

Fantastic writing, characters, story, suspense, and narration. The 12 disks just flew by. Highly recommended for mystery/thriller readers. Graeme Malcolm is a superb reader of this series.

This book is the 3rd book in the Department Q series, written by a Danish author. With each subsequent book, the character development just keeps getting better and better. This is a police procedural crime novel, but the little bits of humor thrown in are perfect, especially the inner dialog of Carl Morck, the head of Dept. Q, the department of lost causes. I know some people don’t care what order they read a series, but I really do feel this series needs to be read in the order it was written.

I have just finished the first disc of this book. So far, it's excellent, like the first two in the series. You've got to love the character of Assad.
