Eastwood's 2nd directorial effort and his first western directorship. From this point on he would rarely have somebody else direct his films. Goodbye Sergio Leone and Don Siegel. Note that this film has similarities to High Noon. Not that it is like High Noon. Some have said it is the opposite of High Noon. Both films have one man against a gang led by a recently released prisoner, but in this case instead of the hero being a great man, the hero is an amoral man. This film has a lot of humor, High Noon has none, just the business of trying to survive. Both films have very incompetent, scared villagers.

Deserves to be seen on the big screen for the photography and the bigger-than-life characters.

Eastwood, whatever his limitations as an actor, has a genuine screen presence, and the ferocity of his old-testament morality tale is breathtaking. (Compare Wm S Hart's "Hell's Hinges")

However, at nearly 2 hours, it's way too long; it seems he's forgotten that the purpose of editing is to compress time.

Clint Eastwood's second film as a director -- and his first western -- is a minor classic.

One of the best Westerns of the 1970s.

High Plains Drifter' is a classic, not just as a Western, but as an avant-garde Twilight-Zonish art film as well. Even Sergio Leone had never done a Western the way Clint did this one. While 'Pale Rider' more than a decade down the road would revisit the concept, it did so in a slightly more conventional manner, without the bizarre, garish, living nightmare feel that runs through 'High Plains Drifter' in a subtle electric undercurrent. It's essential Eastwood.

A morality tale couched in western garb. Clint exacts vengeance on an entire town and rides away. Classic Eastwood!

Couldn't remember if I had seen this - now I have. Interesting variation on Western movie stereotypes.

What I like about Westerns is how they take complex issues with many shades of gray and turn them into black and white issues with simple solutions. What could be simpler than whipping a murderer to death on main street in the dark anonymously? I would rate the Western cult classic, "High Plains Drifter", at 5.0 stars because Clint Eastwood makes vigilante justice so entertaining.

It's a shame that the motion picture industry can no longer afford to produce Westerns on location.

A great revenge-fantasy film abut a "stranger" who "returns" to a wicked, corrupt little town.

One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. Well worth the price of admission to any theater.

This is the way I want to remember Clint. Not some old man babbling to a chair with nobody sitting in it.
