A fascinating treatment of the Mississippi...focusing what might be called non-traditional facets of the river such as Elvis Presley's Memphis and Beale St, to Clarksville the birthplace of the blues {tho we missed the Dockery on the Mississippi Delta}, to plantation country, to Rock Island, Iowa the largest war metal production facility in the world, to the Mall of America, the largest mall. One also gets a tour of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans' 9th.

From New Orleans to Lake Itaska, Minnesota we travel along the 2,500 mile waterway.

Wonderful.

Not being American, I'd never really thought much about this river and its path from the South, all the way through to the North. In my head, it was always associated with rampant violent racist acts and it was nice to see its important from an agricultural, historical, industrial perspective.

Exceptional documentary follows a British journalist up the Mississippi from the Delta to its ultimate source. McDonald looks at the history of the river and its people, the culture, the land it passes through, and its impact on America. Some of the stories here will be familiar, but others are a surprise, and it's interesting to see the river in ways we're not used to. Highly recommended.
