I have mixed feelings about this book. There is some marvellous stuff in it, especially in the relationships between women and between women and the small boy. I see the author's goal as opening to us the experience of refugees who are coming from horrific experiences, and it is also fascinating to see England through the eyes of someone from a very poor Nigerian village. There are some terribly violent and disturbing scenes, which could be the stuff of nightmares. The uninteresting part for me was the relationship between our white protagonist and her lover -- he was insipid and didn't appeal to me at all, unlike pretty well every other principal character. In the end, I really liked it, and it was even unexpected. Worth a read, if you can bear the violence.

Although I had mixed feelings about this book, I have to admit it is a very powerful story. Some parts of it were captivating and heart wrenching, while other parts rambled with irrelevant detail. Overall, I'm happy to have read it. Be warned there are one or two disturbing scenes that will leave you with a lump in your throat.

The reader of this audiobook is just fantastic! I'm not sure that I would be enjoying the story nearly so much without her gifted narration.
