A fantasy book about a boy discovered that his grandfather's old fantasy stories are actually true. Will he find the place that his grandfather refer him to? Who will he meet there? What will he discover? I really enjoyed this book as well as its graphic novel and movie because it's very engaging. Once you read this first book in the series, you will want to continue reading the following books and to find out what happened to him and his friends next.

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs, follows the life of Jacob Portman, a 16-year-old boy who lives in Florida. Jacobs's main role-model was his Grandfather. His Grandfather would tell him all these amazing stories about theses peculiar children and how they had these marvelous abilities. One day Jacob receives news about his Grandfathers death. His death was extremely strange and Jacob felt the urge to learn more about his Grandfather. He decided to go to Cairnholm in New South Wales where his grandfather grew up in this home for children. Jacob soon learns that the stories of those peculiar children were anything but stories. I liked this book series, the way that Ransom Riggs uses words and their terminology was genius. He would compare the color of the sky to a fresh bruise and the color of a girl's skirt to the color of the sky at a funeral. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children is a dark novel with monsters and gory scenes. I would give this book an age rating of 11 or higher.

I remember watching the movie that came out a few years ago based on this book, starring Eva Green. I remember thinking "meh" about it at the time, and that's pretty much how I feel about the book as well. Really, the saving grace here is the creepy old photographs, and the way Riggs built a story around them. The characters themselves aren't really memorable. I don't recall their names or personality traits- I only recall their abilities. The major gripe I have here is it took FOREVER for this book to get interesting. The first hundred pages were ridiculously boring. Had I not seen the movie or flipped through the book looking at the photographs, I would have DNF'd this about 50 pages in, easy. The main character, Jacob, didn't even meet the children until about 150 pages into the novel. That's an awful long time to wait to meet the characters that your book is named after. Even after that, the information was way too long in coming- you're not in possession of all the facts and most of the world-building until about 50 pages from the end. Jacob grates on my nerves too, and I'm not entirely sure if it's his character or Riggs' writing style. The story finally got good about 100 pages from the end, and I'm intrigued to continue on in the series, as long as it doesn't take forever to get off the ground like this one.

This book is about a teenager who lived his whole life hearing amazing and fantastical stories from his grandfather. After his grandfather spoke his last words after a vicious attack, he learns that maybe those stories weren’t as impossible as he thought.

This book paints a beautiful picture of a world while keeping the mysteries hidden. The photos enhance the storytelling, rather than being a crutch, which I’ve seen some books do. The ability to imagine the characters as the story was unfolding is a very valuable experience. It was quite an adventure following along, trying to figure out what’s going on. The writing makes you feel as if you are being dragged along the characters for the ride. The main drawback I see is the side characters lose their individuality and I often had a difficult time remembering who is who. Other than this, the mix of fantastical with a pinch of history makes this book a wonderful read.

I really liked this graphic novel! The book version was a little hard for me to get into, but the graphic novel really explained everything well and the graphics were amazing! I especially love the contrast in the colors when Jacob goes between the loop and the island. 10/10 would recommend!

This book is well written and interesting. I think, over all, it was a very good book, but it wasn't really my "cup of tea."

This was a much better representation of the story than the movie.
