Book 4 of The League series, preceded by Born of Ice and a short novella Fire and Ice and followed by Born of Silence. Fun and exciting story of Caillen Dagan who by trying to save his sister is captured and almost put to death at which time he finds his true birthright and biological father. Caillen is a ruthless survivor who is trying to uncover who is behind the plot of killing his father. Desideria is a half human, half quill who is also forced to survive while uncovering the plot of who is trying to murder her mother, the Queen. This story is a bit slow starting off, but it quickly picks up on excitement while the two join forces.

Ms.Kenyon delivers once again an amazing tale full of passion, adventure and excitement !!!

I remember when I was reading BOI (Born of Ice ), there was a a part where they mentioned Cailleen was an emperor , and when i first read that part i was like what do you mean emperor , when he was always known as the smuggler, Darling Cruel's best friend and Shahara's beloved brother , but BOS (Born of Shadows) explains how Cai elevated from a smuggler to an emperor , and I am so happy to see he has found happiness in the arms of the Qill ex- princess Des .

I simply had a hard time putting this book down because every page just oozes with s o much action and excitement, I know its been a long wait for this book but I have to say it was worth waiting for!!!!

In BON we meet Caillan Dagan, best friend of Darling Cruel, smuggler extrordinaire, and consumate manwhore. In BOF we learn that he is protective of his sisters and, as an aside, adopted. In BOI, Devyn mentions that he inherited his Uncle Caillan's star charts, and later in the book Emperor Caillan deOrczy shows up in a show of force to free Devyn from a stupid nutjob. When I came to that part, I was 'Wait, what? Emperor? How?!' This book explains how one charming rogue becomes heir to a powerful empire and how one delicate rose captures the heart of a rake.

Caillan's life as a dreg has given him some very useful life skills that he can apply to his new career. As a security expert he can spot holes that you can drive a bomb-laden shuttlecraft through. As a gem appraiser he can tell how much the rings on fat politician's finger cost while said politico is begging for more money for his starving people. As a free-trader, he know where planetary armadas are, as well as pirate corridors, relief vessels, and the fair price of goods. And his negotiating skills and exposure to the seamier side of life makes him resistant to the Qillaq negotiating technique, much to the frustration of the Qillaq queen. What is the Qillaq negotiating technique? Well, it involves a hot woman, the raciest lingerie you can imagine, while lounging in such a way that most males are standing at attention, and most females are disgusted at how the guys are slaves to testosterone. Cai on the other hand, looked at the negotiator and thought 'I've seen hotter, younger women more naked.' though he did note that if the cute bodyguard had been 'dressed' like that his mind would have been elsewhere.

That is not a question that I want to hear my little sister asking a man, especially one that I consider a friend, lying bare-assed on my floor.---Chayden, Desidaria's brother
