When musicologist Doctor Lily Penleric is passed over for a prominent teaching position, she decides to leave the city to visit her sister in the rugged mountains of Appalachia. Here she discovers a wellspring of emotional tunes passed down from the original Irish and Scottish immigrants who settled in the area. Determined to document the history of the songs, she immerses herself in mountain life, falls in love with a local musician, and is profoundly changed by the generosity, strength and freedom of the fiercely proud mountain people.

This was a lovely movie, showing how life in the Appalachians was in the early part of the 20th century. The film deals with the music made by the descendants of Europeans who had passed down their old (mostly British Isles) songs through the generations. It's wonderful to spend so much time listening to the music, and following an engaging story throughout. The filmmakers made the cast of characters more inclusive than one might have expected for a work produced in 2001.

Songcatcher is a very good film. It shows how people, place and music can change us. Fans of bluegrass and folk music will enjoy it the most. It is rated PG-13 for sexual content, brief partial nudity and an intense scene of childbirth.
