Used this as a read-aloud for a 4th grade general education class when I was student teaching and it was well received by my students.

Sahara Jones lives with her mother in the city. Her father walked out and Sahara pines for him, writing him letter after letter. When the letters are discovered, though, Sahara is labelled special by her school and made to receive learning support in the hallway, with the intimidating Darrell Sikes, a juvenile-delinquent-in-training. Saraha''s mother doesn''t accept Sahara''s special label and requests that Sahara be given a second chance by repeating the fifth grade. Sahara and her classmates spend a year in the classroom of Madame Poitier (Miss Pointy), an exceptional, flamboyant teacher with unorthodox methods. Miss Pointy''s encouragement and support bring Sahara out of her shell and help her begin to realize her dreams of becoming a writer. If you''ve ever doubted the importance of a teacher''s influence on children, this is the book for you to read.
