The book has a few details that are different from its later movie adaptations, but over all is a pretty okay read. The main roadbump to enjoying the content comes in the form of some conversation regarding people of intersex gender (being born with both male and female genitalia). The characters we're supposed to be sympathetic to are suddenly transformed for a chapter into Grade A Awful People. It's a detail that wasn't at all in the later movies, and I understand that people's viewpoints on these matters change over time, but the overwhelmingly harsh language and treatment of a marginalized group in an otherwise fine horror novel took me out of the story for a while.

This horror novel, written by "the Japanese Stephen King," uses found footage.

This book is great. It can be a little weird at times, but I think that is just because it was translated over from Japanese. It isn't scary really, and nothing like the movie here in America. So if you want to read it, don't worry, not much is going to be spoiled for you!
