Pretty exciting movie with non-stop action with a provocative view of a day in the life of a soldier on the front lines of WWI.

RE: Excellent Movie About WWI--I liked this movie so much that I watched it about four times. This movie is about two soldiers --Schofield and Blake. They are soldier messengers from the British 8th division. These two soldiers need to relay a message to the British forces on the front line not to attack the Germans. In 1917, the British did not have the internet or the cell phone yet. So, Schofield and Blake have to physically walk and relay the written message orders into the treacherous war zone along the front line.*******************************
There were two parts of the movie that I liked tremendous. First, Schofield meets a French woman and a new born baby girl. In this scene, Schofield recites some poetry about the Jumblies. He also gives food and milk for the baby. The second scene that I like deals with a soldier that sings a song called I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger. I will go ahead and post that song in this forum in the next box below these comments.******************************
I felt my time was well spent watching this movie for several reasons. I learned about trench warfare during WWI. I discovered new poetry and music as well. This movie reminded me of the movie called Saving Private Ryan.

"1917" is a film directed by British director Sam Mendes and based on the recollections of his paternal grandfather Alfred Hubert Mendes recollections and short stories. The movie is an dramatic take on Operation Alberich when the German line was strategically withdrawn leading to the British Army as misinterpreting the retreat as a full withdrawal. This leads to the British units in the area advancing into a trap laid by the Germans. This is where Mendes's two main characters lance corporals Schofield and Blake enter the story. Tasked with delivering an order for units in the area to stand down and not pursue the Germans. The drama comes from the fact that Schofield and Blake have less than 24 hours to deliver the message and prevent their cohorts from stepping into a ambush. The film follows Schofield and Blake as they make their way across the French countryside. The film is ultimately low on action but high on drama, the film is a traditional war film but it eschews the violent set piece battles for the higher emotional drama of Schofield and Blake. Aside from the drama, the film does a great job capturing the zeitgeist and anxiety of the war, the emotional investment of the main characters in one another and their mission. The uniforms and sets are also spot on. I highly recommend this film.

Brilliant production and amazing how it glued me to the screen with such a simple message, a road trip quest about the insanity of war and survivor regret.

The craftsmanship marks this as a director's movie with a spartan script, amazing camera work, and the most impressive expansion and compression of time and space I've ever watched. The camera eye was seamless and never skipped a beat over a full range of calm to action, perspective jumps, lighting and distance extremes, even wet versus dry. You're never left wondering what's happening or where you are; it felt like the entire story evolved inside your head because you were there. The sets oozed detail and I believe everything not handled or human was full CG, but at the time I questioned nothing. Not once did I get that gut feeling that I just watched digital pablum, but many scenes had to be full CG based on circumstance. The entire movie could have been spoiled by a single frame of James Bond surfing a slushy tidal wave with the mouse cursor in-frame, but don't hold your breath because it never happens.

I suspect a worn and dirty world appearance is hard to replicate virtually, but my awe was on a level that reminded me of seeing the original Star Wars at a theatre. I saw a couple of period and technical glitches, but they were debatable esoteric nerd stuff that didn't change the telling. The worst part about this film was my fascination, feeling more like a film club viewing than enjoying a major release, but I think any missing emotional introspection was well compensated for with an overwhelming visual experience. Please read the low ratings here carefully as they're true; you'll hate this film if your idea of a good movie is Hollywood stars, witty quips, car chases, shootouts, and the hero gets the girl.

Military guy gets sent on an odyssey of a mission to rein in a rogue Colonel. Along the way he encounters 'The Horror, The Horror' of War. Seems familiar. Oh yes, it's derivative of "Apocalypse Now" and the book "Heart of Darkness" by Josef Conrad. I must vehemently disagree with Ambroz789. This is a sorry mess of a film. Not even appearances by fine actors Colin Firth (the General) or Benedict Cumberbatch (the Colonel) could help.

The negative comments on this movie reinforce my belief that the world is filled with stupid people. It's a great movie, not boring, maybe not completely historically accurate but the story is compelling and the acting is great. God I fucking hate stupid people.

This film was intentionally shot with a gimmick outlook: To keep the viewer in the same terrain as the two principle characters in what appears to be [ except for one blackout ] ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT with amazing camerawork. Big-scale production delivers a " YOU ARE THERE " vibe like few others. Whether this is a virtue or deterent is up to you.

Great story and movie. Amazing recreation of the horrible conditions that WWI soldiers were routinely exposed to. The depiction of trench life was especially revealing. Poor bastards!

Way too long with 200 minutes. I seen the compass used once. How did the lance corporal have any idea which direction to follow with all the obstacles he had to over come. If there is any truth to the story the soldier should have earned British Medal of Honor.

The film is typical of the British tendency to attempt epic war stories on the cheap. The grimness of trench warfare is reduced here to a gallivant through mud infested fields or a ruined village. Moreover, the story lacks not just in detail but also in historical accuracy, mainly a revisionist version of events with a politically correct slant. Soldiers of colour wander across the screen with a regularity not reflective of the British Army in Flanders. Sikhs were not sequestered with British troops and Black soldiers were very few and far between outside of regiments raised in the colonies. It is also worth noting that WWI airmen clung on to a pretense of chivalry: they were not do or die fanatics -- even German pilots obeyed the rules of gallantry.

The tragedy of war. Another war story out of the ordinary. What I enjoyed the most was 'the making of' the movie and the new techniques in the filming of sequences.

I liked the movie, but I feel it could've been a lot better because I felt like it ended without really finishing the story. When the movie ended, I was thinking that's it? I felt like a lot more could've been added at the end to help complete the story.

This is literally the most boring and sleep inducing "Military Industrial Complex" recruitment celluloid i have ever seen to date, period. The most shocking thing about what I just said,is the fact that Sam Mendes supervised films are usually not boring at all, period. This is the bottom of the barrel for director Sam Mendes's career, period.Instantly forgettable!!!!!!

I agree with Howeshound...Cliche storyline, average acting, and much better films than this. Cinematography was the best part...bleak though the landscape was. The song and singer in the woods was a bit pathetic...stuck in too provide contrast to the pace of attack which followed. Many of the events that happened on route felt like affectations. No plot...a string of events.

Five stars for special effects and technical wizardry. Three stars for direction, although Mendes can do far better than this. Three stars for acting, not bad not great. Two stars for script, a standard war film churn-out. No stars for plot. There isn't one. It's essentially a documentary with an uninspired narrative. If you want WW1 with a story line read Robert Graves' "Goodbye to all that" or Erich Maria Remarque's "All quiet on the Western Front". AJP Taylor's "The First World War: an illustrated history" is far better-written, more entertaining, less predictable, than this film.

Easy to see how this movie won for best cinematography, the camera work was incredible. The story and the actors themselves immerse you in an unforgettable experience.

This is an absolutely superb movie! Never mind it is a WWI story but from the screenplay, the actors, acting, sets, film work - it had my husband and I engaged from the moment we started watching right up until the start of the credits. The only thing was that we found that we really regretted not seeing it on the big screen where many of its' effects would have been amplified. If I could, I would give it 10 stars...it is that excellent! Highly recommended!
