A few sections of this book scared the living daylights out of me. “Explorer” is too gentle of a word to label Fawcett and the others who ventured into the Amazon during this time period. This is my second David Grann book (The Wager)…

I am out of town until August 25. Can this book be available to me when I get back to Charlotte?

Grann tackles the disappearance of explorer Percy Fawcett, last seen in the Brazilian Amazon in 1925. Grann is great at portraying the world of larger than life adventurers and blank spaces on the map Fawcett inhabited; fortunately, he's…

"The rain forest was not a garden of easy abundance, but precisely the opposite. Its quiet, shaded halls of leafy opulence were not a sanctuary, but rather the greatest natural battlefield anywhere on the planet, hosting an unremitting and…

I listened to this book on tape of a real adventure read beautifully by Mark Deakin. The book tells the story of a British explorer and his quest for a lost city in the Amazon. No one knows if he ever found the city because he never exited…

4 1/2 star read. This non-fiction book read like a thriller and was a fascinating read. British explorer Percy Fawcett was exploring the Amazon jungles over years and kept on hearing about a fabled city, El Dorado, which he called the…

Of the many lost and ill-fated expeditions into uncharted Amazonia, that of explorer Percy Fawcett, who disappeared without a trace with his son in 1925 while searching for a forgotten civilization, has undoubtedly raised the most…

I can’t think of a better summer read than David Grann’s 2009 book, The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon. This is the fascinating, page turning, nail biting true story of Percy Fawcett, a real-life Indiana Jones…

I do not think I would last a week on one of these expeditions. This book is why I read - sending me into the inhospitable jungle where men risked their lives in the quest for knowledge. I enjoyed this very much and have moved the movie…

Col. Percy Harrison Fawcett was the last of the great Victorian explorers, so when he and his son disappeared on a 1925 expedition to prove that a large civilization existed in the supposedly inimical Amazon, it made headlines around the…

Though I never really read books like this one, I have found this story to be a really great one. From the very first paragraph of Fawcett and his son stepping on the boat to begin what would end up being their very last adventure to the…

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author is able to transition from the hsistrical story of Fawcett to his own story of investigation smoothly and clearly for the reader. Well-defined historical characters and vivid descriptions of…

Very interesting read. I knew nothing of South American history until I read this book. I'm not very interested in learning more.

There are lots of really interesting facts and scenarios in this book for anyone who enjoys adventure reading. Be patient through the first part of the book which I thought was poorly organized and unfocused. The action and adventure picks…

This work of narrative nonfiction was fascinating! It delves into exploration, dangerous adventures, the Amazon, the Amazon's many critters, colonialism, treasure, and more. I learned a lot and was entertained as well!

It's not a book about the adventures in the amazon and the journey to find the lost city of Z (at least not in the first 80 pages). Rather it's a book all the people that ever attempted to find the city of Z and the people around them.

I found this book boring. I didn't get past the 1st 50 pages.

There isn't a yellow brick road on this adventure to the Lost City of Z, and the flying monkeys, wicked witches, Munchkins, and wizard have been replaced by parasitic worms that burrow into your skin, boa constrictors, natives with…

Born in England in 1868, raised in exotic places in the far East, Colonel Percy Fawcett was obsessed with finding the fabled city of El Dorado that he code-named 'Z'. The tale describes his dangerous treks into the Amazonian jungle to…

Rather than write down and describe the story discussed in this novel, all I will simply say is that this book is so well made and enthralling that I will simply say that as a history-buff and book-fanatic, this is hands-down my favorite…

Author sets out to discover what happened to missing explorer Percy Fawcett who disappeared in the Amazon in 1925 looking for the Lost City of Z. Great description of the Amazon environment.

Its pretty exciting read, Grann does a great job of giving lots of relevant details to recreate the adventure, and get an understanding of exploration at the turn of the century. I am sure there are mistakes if you nitpick, but it is a…
