Excellent Book! New take on the vampire legend. Up there with "Salem's Lot", "I am Legend", "Progeny of the Adder" and the original "Dracula".

This vampire horror novel by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan is masterfully paced dread that draws on large amounts of traditional vampire legend, and combines them with modern medicine to explain the existence of its monsters. The band…

A twist on the vampire premise, a quick pace, and some interesting characters, make for an enjoyable read. Del Toro and Hogan’s story builds on the conceit that vampirism is a virus, and in modern day USA, dangerous viral infections are…

The Strain is the first book in a horror fiction trilogy written by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo Del Toro. It follows Eph Goodweather as he tries to stop a global vampiric epidemic. The story is set in New York, where Dr. Goodweather is…

Pretty good, but I like del Toro's work. Now it's on tv! LOL. I get to explain everything to my husband!

This is anything BUT a standard vampire story! It's extremely scary, well-written, and descriptive. The characters are well fleshed-out and because it's a trilogy, you really feel like you are going through this long ordeal with the…

I definitely liked the first book the most out of the trilogy. But the series is a good read all around. I highly recommend.

I loved this book! I couldn't but it down. It had a very creepy vibe to it, which I loved. The rest of the series is well done too, although the first book is the best of the three in my opinion.

I thought the book was well writen particulary the early part in the airport thr coffin with dirt in it vanishing in thin air really scary stuff. after that the book dialog and plot was a bit lacking and unbelieveable.

This was a well written fictional book. It draws you in and is not the conventional vampire story. There is a good balance of conversation between characters, graphic description of scenes, and intense action. The book is somewhat of a…

I was so excited to read this and was just disappointed. The story starts off eerie and suspenseful and then just plateaus. At around page 200 I thought we were finally being told the back story that would take the story in a different…

starts REALLY slow -- the first 100 pages are mostly filler -- but after that it starts to get good. I liked it and will read the next one!

I quite enjoyed the first 300 or so pages of this book. I will read the second of the trilogy. After all the Sparkle Vamps of the last few years, the creatures in this one bring the menace back. The Strain was both cinematic and a quick…

Pretty good - very much in the vein of Michael Crichton or Dan Brown. The book is actually fairly slow, following several characters over the progression of the novel - usually horror books are fast paced. Unlike most vampire books/shows…

I really enjoyed The Strain. If you like vampires, zombies, end of world scenarios, then you'll probably get a kick out of this. The story is fast paced, and has a movie-like quality to it. In that sense, I found it similar to The Da…

I watched an interview with Guillermo Del Toro on Chud.com over a year ago, and in it he talked about his frustration with the way vampires are depicted today. He talked about how much he wanted to read a good vampire book, one where the…

While I haven't read any of Chuck Hogan's other books, I would call this Guillermo del Toro meets Michael Crichton. There's a lot of procedural work and pseudoscience, and underlying it all is Guillermo del Toro's love of folklore and…
